Kenai River Public Access Update.

Kenai and Soldotna working to repair infrastructure at public access locations on the Kenai River after flood.

The Soldotna City Council has begun work in the planning stage of cleanup and repairs of the infrastructure damaged, destroyed or swept away in the recent flooding on the Kenai River. One member in particular is spearheading the march foreword. Councilmember Betty Obendorf, not being one to sit and wait, is working hard to get the council involved in the early discussions on the reconstruction of the rivers public access areas. Obendorf called the Kenai River Soldotna's most important resource. She is worried that if the city of Soldotna does not get involved and start saying something about the cleanup of the Kenai river, no one will.

Additionally, Kenai Borough Mayor John Williams, signed a Disaster Emergency Declaration on Tuesday, Feb. 13th addressing the recent flooding on the Kenai River. The declaration was in response to an estimated $6.0 million in property damages as well as over $1.0 million in additional damages inside the city limits of Soldotna. The Borough Mayor's office will also be soliciting cooperation of Federal, State and local agencies to speed up all the necessary permits to begin the clean up of the tangle of debris and to start the repairs to damaged along the Kenai River. The Mayors office also is seeking state aid for private property owners impacted by the flooding. Much of the damaged private and public property includes boardwalks, docks and homes.
