About Kenai River Salmon.
Silver Salmon, also known as Coho Salmon enter the Kenai in July and continue through the Silver Salmon season closure October 31st. As with the Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon return to the river in two different runs. The first arrives in late July and continue through August when the second run begins to show. The two runs overlap but are distinguished be their peaks in the run returns. Sockeye Salmon, also referred to as Reds enter the Kenai in June and continue to arrive until early August. As with the Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon, Reds also return to the river in two runs. The early run, the smaller of the two, arrives in early June and provides limited fishing in the lower and middle Kenai as these fish seldom waste any time returning to their spawning grounds in the Russian River miles up the Kenai River. This first run Pink Salmon, or Humpy, return in great numbers every even numbered year. Although not a prised fish by table means, the humpy will bring a day full of excitement to all that cast a line. These are absolutely fantastic fish for young children as the action is fast and furious.
